Emblem Books in the Frankfurt and Leipzig

Book Fair Catalogues (1571-1624)

A List of Works extrapolated from the Collection of Catalogues
at the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel

By Stephen Rawles

E-mail: S.Rawles@hatii.arts.gla.ac.uk

This list is derived from a systematic trawl for references to Emblem Books in Frankfurt and Leipzig Fair catalogues now in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. Extensive reference is made to the listing of these catalogues by Wolfgang Borm (Catalogi Nundinales 1571-1852: Die Frankfurter und Leipziger Messkataloge der Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel, Wolfenbüttel: Herzog August Bibliothek, 1982). In a few cases the catalogue cited is not in Borm's listing, in which case the Wolfenbüttel pressmark is given.

The list makes no claim to be complete.

The listing is by Author, or Title in the case of anonymous works. The citation is usually from the first catalogue in Borm's listing, followed by the references to Borm, the place (not always Frankfurt or Leipzig), season and year of the catalogue, the classification given in the catalogue, and the leaf reference. In all but a very few cases, entries from the catalogues have been linked to copies or reliable references to copies of the relevant edition or issue. The following abbreviations are used:

Antwerp City Library: Stadsbibliotheek Antwerpen

BFEB: Alison Adams, Stephen Rawles, Alison Saunders: A Bibliography of French Emblem Books, Geneva: Droz, 1999-2002.

GUL: Glasgow University Library

NLS: National Library of Scotland

UCAT: The Union Catalogue of Emblem Books database elaborated by Peter Daly and placed online by Stan Beeler, at the University of Northern British Columbia: http://quarles.unbc.edu/ucat/.

Univ. of London Library: University of London Library

Voet: Leon Voet, The Plantin Press, 1555-1589 : a Bibliography of the Works printed and published by Christopher Plantin at Antwerp and Leiden (in collaboration with Jenny Voet-Grisolle), Amsterdam: Van Hoeve, 1980-1983.

Warburg: Warburg Institute, London

Worldcat: the Union catalogue based on the OCLC bibliographic database, available to subscribers.

If a reference to an extant or recorded copy has not been made, the fact is noted, and in some cases commented upon. Similarly, references to editions or issues from years other than that of the catalogue cited are indicated.

References to copies are followed by the citations in the original catalogues where they differ from that given first.

For an analysis of this list, see: Stephen Rawles, 'The Circulation of Emblem Books through Book Fairs: a Preliminary Study', in Living in Posterity: Essays in Honour of Bart Westerweel, edited bu Jan Frans van Dijkhuizen, Paul Hoftijzer, Juliette Roding and Paul Smith (Hilversum: Verloren, 2004).
