Because of the number of editions involved, students of Alciato's emblems are not always able to check readily simple facts such as their early chronology. The following table lists the emblems which first appeared in the Selecta epigrammata of 1529 and in editions other than the basic collections of 1531 and 1546. At the same time it provides a concordance of these emblems for seven key editions. It is hoped that it will be useful to publish this sort of material on the net, though there may be some difficulty with tables, particularly for those with earlier versions of the software.
The sources used in the table are:
1529 Selecta epigrammata graeca latine versa, ex septem epigrammatum Graecorum libris. Accesserunt omnibus omnium prioribus editionibus ac versibus plus quam quingenta Epigrammata, recens versa, ab Andrea Alciato, Ottomaro Luscinio, ac Iano Cornario Zuiccauiensi (Basle, Io.Bebelii, 1529).
1531 Emblematum liber (Augsburg, H.Steyner, 6 April 1531)
1534 Emblematum libellus (Paris, C.Wechel, 1534)
1546 Emblematum libellus (Venice, Aldus, 1546)
1547 Emblematum libri duo (Lyon, J.de Tournes, 1547)
1548 Emblemata (Lyon, G.Rouille, 1548)
1549 Los Emblemas de Alciato traducidos en rhimas espa-olas (Lyon, G.Rouille, 1549)
1550 Emblemata (Lyon, G.Rouille, 1550)
The "offensive" emblem, "Adversus naturam peccantes", which first appeared in the Aldine edition, is included because it is not a regular element of early editions. It is present in 1547, in 1548, and in the French of 1549 (p.102), under the heading Luxure, as "Contre les bougres". Mignault gave the text only in a note at end of "Epigrammatum græcorum ... explicatio" of 1577, p.683 and later editions; but it is otherwise excluded until the Paduan edition of 1618.
"Antiquissima quaeque commentitia" and "Vino prudentiam augeri" appear in all editions of 1542 (Latin, French, German), but not in the Latin of 1544, which is a reprint of 1535.
