Layout

100 emblems, each occupying an opening: verso: 8-line French verse; engraving incorporating the motto, 4-line Latin verse. French verses in roman, 106mm for 20 lines; Latin texts in italic, 29mm for 4 lines. The engravings have the cross of Lorraine ‘signature’ of Pierre Woeriot effaced, but still recognisable.

Remarks

The engravings by Pierre Woeriot were used in all the known editions of Montenay’s emblems (see also F.437 and F.439).

As a result of misimposition in gatherings n and D, the French verses of nos. 42 and 43 are in each other’s places, as are those of nos. 44 ad 45, and of nos. 98 and 100.

This edition was reissued, with a fresh gathering A in 1602.

The UKi GU copy of the 1584 state, and the Fra PIN copy of the 1602 state include elaborately calligraphed Dutch translations of some of the verses in the hand of Anna Roemers Visscher.
