tetrastichon.

Ut Remora ingentem potis est retinere carinam,
Haec licèt optato naviget usque Notho:[1]
Ingeniis obstat sic magnis parva voluptas:
Maximus & parvo ventus ab imbre perit.

As the remora [or fig. Delay] can hold back a huge ship, although she can run on with Notus’ wished-for wind in her sails. So a small pleasure can hold back great souls, and the greatest wind is destroyed by a small storm.

quatrain.

Petit poysson ha souvent arresté
Une grand’ nef, faisant vent & orage:
Aux grandz engins petite volupté
Ha fait souvent grand encombre & dommage.

Notes:

1.  Notus: the South Wind, bringer of storms and rains.
