Unda refert illum, quem dat sibi terra colorem,
Subdita non alio tincta colore nitet:

Novit adulator, mobilis instar aquae.

Water gives back the colour that earth gives it; subjecting itself, it, painted, takes on no other colour. The flatterer, like changing water, knows how to adapt himself to the different moods of his master.
