Conspicis, ut Pallas nudatis calcibus Hydram
Comprimit, illaeso conterit atque pede:
Cur hoc? Nempe hominem tutum facit inclyta virtus,
Eximit & dirae morsibus invidiae.

Do you see how Pallas crushes the hydra with bare soles, and grinds it with uninjured foot into the ground? Why? Clearly because famous virtue makes a man safe, and preserves him from the bites of fearsome envy.
