REFRIGESCET CHARITAS

Iniquity shall abound, love shall wax cold (Matthew 24:12)

lxviii.

Jam fuerat divinus Amor restinctus iniquo
Hoc vase, et lerna hac, quae vehit, et vehitur,
Ni prope sit Christus: cujus de lumine, tetrae,
Tamquam Sole nouo, diffugiunt tenebrae.

At this time divine love had been extinguished by this wicked vase, and by this monster, which both carries [it] and is carried, unless Christ is near, from whose light, as if from a new Sun, the foul darkness flees.
