Virtutem honor sequitur.

Honour follows virtue

Ad amplissimum Antonium Verantium Episcopum Agriensem.[1]

Marcel[2] edifia deux temples magnifiques,
L’un fut pour la vertu, & l’autre pour l’honneur.
Cestuy-cy n’est ouvert qu’à l’homme de grand coeur,
Qui aura bravement servi les Republiques.
C’est pourquoy au devant, comme premiere entree
De l’honneur, fut basti le temple de vertu:
Car on n’y entre pas si l’on n’a combattu,
Et enduré pour la gloire esperee.

1.  Antun Vrancic (Anton Wranciush in German, Antal Verancsics in Hungarian): Croatian diplomat, statesman and humanist. As an envoy of the Emperor, he spent time in France and England, and notably six years in Turkey. As a churchman, he was successively Bishop of Pécs, 1554, then Eger, 1557, Archbishop of Esztergom (Primate of Hungary), 1569, and finally Cardinal in 1573, only a few days before his death.
