Georgii Bonae &c..[1]

Epitaph for the most noble youth Georgius Bona, etc.

A large globe of the world on which are a cross, the head of a man and a child and a fish. A horse, an eagle, and a man protude out of the globe. The man reaches out to a figure in a cloud. A woman sits in front of the globe holding a flower in her right hand. Two other women sit either side of her.

Cy dessoubz est gisant du païs l’esperance
Les Muses, la Vertu, avec la Pieté,
La parfaite amitié attendant delivrance
Jusques au jour que Christ jugera d’equité.
O combien ceste mort nous a fait de dommage!
Toutesfois à jamais le renom & l’honneur
Dont Dieu par sa bonté doua se personnage
Ira accompagnant nostre juste douleur.
Puis quand l’heure viendra qu’il faudra comparoistre

Alors chascun de nous le pourra recongnoistre
Avecques les heureux vivre eternellement.
Ainsi doncques au ciel son ame est bien-heureuse,
Ce pendant qu’icy bas tousjours nous regrettons,
Et que l’oncle plourant d’une main plantureuse
Bastist à son nepveu le tombeau des plus bons.

1.  Georg Bona: Sambucus’ pupil in Padua, nephew of Nicolaus Oláh (Olahus), Archbishop of Esztergom. Bona died in 1559.
