Quòd nimium tua forma tibi Narcisse placebat,
In florem, & noti est versa stuporis olus.[1]
Ingenii est marcor, cludesque [=cladesque] philautia, doctos
Quae pessum plures datque deditque viros.
Qui veterum abiecta methodo, nova dogmata quaerunt.
Nilque suas praeter tradere phantasias.

Because your beauty gave you too much satisfaction, Narcissus, it was turned both into a flower and into a plant of acknowledged insensibility. Self-satisfaction is the rot and destruction of the mind. Learned men in plenty it has ruined, and ruins still, men who cast off the method of teachers of old and aim to pass on new doctrines, nothing more than their own imaginings.

LUXURE.

Pan piedebouc, couronné de Rocquette,
De grand luxure est symbole, ou marquette.
Rocquette est chaude, & bouc luxurieux,[1]
Et les Satyrs des Nymphes amoureux.[2]

Ceste enseigne de luxure est prinse sur la nature de
l’herbe Rocquette esmouvant à paillardise, &
de la beste boucquine tresluxurieuse, donnant à
entendre, que luxure eschaulfe ardemment: & puys
put villainement.

Notes:

1.  Rocket is described as herba salax at Ovid, Ars amatoria, 4.22. Pliny, Natural History, 10.83.182 and 19.44.154, lists it as an aphrodisiac.

2.  Satyrs were creatures half-human, half-goat in form, like Faunus, and Pan with whom Faunus was often identified. See emblems 91 ([A58a091]), and 115 ([A58a115]). Cf. Horace, Odes, 3.18.1: ‘Faunus, you who lust after the fleeing nymphs’.
