La hazienda d’el perdido.

Ottava rhima.

Entre altas sierras y peñascos duros
Lleva sus higos la sylvestre higuera,
Que los cuervos y grajas mal maduros
Comen, sin que aya de ellos valedera
Utilidad a’l hombre. Los impuros
Ansi dispenden con la placentera
Y desonesta gente lo hęredado,
Sin hazer bien à pobre ni à letrado.[1]

Notes:

1.  This is based on an idea in Anthologia Graeca, 12.185.

In desciscentes.

On those who turn traitor

Qụd fine egregios turpi maculaveris orsus,
In noxamque tuum verteris officium,
Fecisti, quod capra, sui mulctaria [=mulctraria] lactis
Cum ferit, & proprias calce profundit opes.[1]

Because you have spoilt your fine beginnings with a shameful end and turned your service into harm, you have done what the she-goat does when she kicks the bucket that holds her milk and with her hoof squanders her own riches.

Notes:

1.  See Erasmus, Adagia, 920 (Capra Syria), where the goat - of Syros, in the Aegean, not Scyros - is wild.
