L. Como conviene llamarse este monstro
Disforme, que ni es hombre, ni es serpiente?

A. Llamarse ha sierpe con cabeza de hombre.
Y tambien hombre con pies de serpiente.
El hombre à la serpiente pare, y ella
De un regueldo bomita a’l hombre medio,
Que sin fin hombre, y sin principio es fiera.
Tal fuè el antiguo Cecrops rey de Athenas,[1]
Y los Gygantes que pariò la tierra.
Y tal figura muestra a’l hombre astuto
Sin religion, que solo a’l mundo cura.

1.  Cecrops, the mythical wise first king of Athens, the city of Pallas Athene, the goddess of wisdom. Cecrops, like the Giants (l.10) was born of the earth and was represented as half-man, half snake.
