Notes:

1.  An elk, representing the family name, is carved on Alciato’s tomb in Pavia.

2.  ‘no dilata nada’: a version of Alexander’s Greek motto, quoted in line 2 of the original subscriptio (‘μηδὲν fert ἀναβλλόμενος‘). See Erasmus, Adagia, 3400 (Nunc tuum ferrum in igne est, ‘Strike while the iron is hot’), where Alexander’s saying is quoted.

3.  Alce. The Greek word ἀλκή means not only ‘elk’ but ‘strength’. The animal ‘elk’ was famed for its speed: see Pliny, Natural History, 8.16.39.

EMBLEMA XI.

Abstinentia.

Integrity

Marmoreae in tumulis, una stat parte columnae
Urceus, ex alia cernere malluvium est
Ius haec forma monet dictum sine sordibus esse
Defunctum puras atque habuisse manus.

On a tomb, at one side of the marble pillar, stands a water-jug, at the other you can see a basin. This design tells us that justice was pronounced without corruption, and that the deceased kept his hands clean.
