On a tomb, at one side of the marble pillar, stands a water-jug, at the other you can see a basin. This design tells us that justice was pronounced without corruption, and that the deceased kept his hands clean.

symbola, urceum & malluvium, quibus in iure
dicundo summa integritas, & abstinentia designa-
tur à muneribus capiundis. Caeterùm manuum a-
bluendarum gestus olim fuit innocentiae aperta

auctoribus cognosci potest.

S’abstenir de prendre presens.
D’Un cousté du tombeau est une aiguiere mise,

un lavemain ou bassin: par lesquelles est si-
gnifiee l’integrité du personnage fort gran-
de, & qu’il s’est abstenu de prendre dons &
presens. Au reste la coustume de laver les
mains fut anciennement usitee pour prote-
station d’innocence: comme il se peut veoir
par les autheurs sacrez & profanes.
