envers Dieu.

Quel diray je estre, ou nommeray ce Monstre?
Qui d’homme n’ha ne de serpent la monstre?
Mais est serpent sans chief: & sans piedz homme?
Doncque serpenpied, Hommenchef je le nomme.

Fin d’homme n’ha, ne Principe de beste.
Cecrops tel Monstre, en Athenes regna
La terre, telz ses filz Geans forma.
Tel Monstre, monstre ung homme sage en soy,
Qui terre aimant, ne tient ne Dieu, ne Foy.

Par ce Monstre sont notéz ceulx
qui forméz d’ame raisonnable, &
d’esprit coelest: toutesfois ne espe
rent aultre vie que terrestre.

1.  Cecrops, the mythical wise first king of Athens, the city of Pallas Athene, the goddess of wisdom. Cecrops, like the Giants (l.8) was born of the earth and was represented as half-man, half snake.

Ne Drago si po dir, ne d’huom perfetto
Il mostro, che vedete, horrido e strano,
Che senza piedi ha testa, braccia, e petto,
E coda di Serpente, e aspetto humano.
Tai son color, che con averso effetto.
Hanno il candido in bocca e’l vero in mano
Dio non conosce, e’ndarno ad alto mira
Chi nel fango mortal s’avolge e gira.
