Aeriam propter crevisse cucurbita pinum
Dicitur, & grandi luxuriasse coma:
Cùm ramos complexa, ipsúmque egressa cacumen,
Se praestare aliis credidit arboribus.
Cui pinus: Nimium brevis est haec gloria: nam, te
Protinus adveniet, quae malè perdet hyems.

A gourd, it is said, grew beside a lofty pine and flourished with abundant foliage. When it had enveloped the branches and grown taller than the tree-top, it then thought itself superior to the other trees. The pine said to it: This glory is exceedingly brief. For winter will shortly come which will utterly destroy you.

Fueillue, grosse, & large, & jusques bien haut creut:

Mais le Pin luy dit lors: ta gloire est peu de cas,
Car voicy l’hyver vient qui te mettra en bas.

SElon que tesmoigne Guichardin, histo-
riographe Italien, ce carme icy d’Alciat
fut affigé à l’huis d’un certain Anglois, qui
devenu fastueux & arrogant pour avoir le
vent en pouppe, se rendoit odieux à beau-
coup de personnes. Ceste fable est enre-
gistree dans le 2. liv. 14. chap. de Crinitus: &
s’employe contre certains petits glorieux,
qui ont plus de montre, qu’ils n’ont de for-
ces & moyens: à l’occasion dequoy se font
moquer d’eux, & decheent bien aisément
comme fueilles seches.
