La lune estant en l’eau, lors un chien s’y miroit,[1]

La lune pour son bruit ne laisse pas d’aller.

commentaires.

Alciat s’attaque icy à certains detracteurs &
mesdisans, lesquels recongnoissans un grand & pro-
fond sçavoir en quelque segnalé & excellent person-
nage, aiment mieux le deschirer par calomnies, que
l’ensuyvre & imiter. Le chien, qui abbaye à la Lu-
ne
, croid que par son japper il arrestera le cours d’i-
celle. Le chien est le symbole d’envie & de detraction.
Cest une chose honteuse, d’estre vaincu par courtoi-
sie: mais il est encor plus honteux de vaincre par
mesdisance. Celuy qui estant injurié ne replique point,
fait retumber l’injure sur la teste de son haineux.
Celle musique est belle, quand l’un se taist, pendant
que l’autre injurie.

    Voce boat torva, praelargo est gutture, rostrum
    Instar habet nasi multiforisque tubae.
    Deformem rabulam, addictum ventrique gulaeque
    Signabit, volucer cum truo pictus erit.

    It screams with a harsh cry, it has an enormous throat, a beak like a spout or a many-holed trumpet. The pelican bird, when painted, will indicate an ugly ranter, enslaved to lust and belly.
