Cum furit in Venerem, pelagi se in littore sistit
Vipera, & ab stomacho dira venena vomit:[1]
Muraenamque ciens ingentia sibila tollit,
At simul amplexus appetit illa viri.[2]
Maxima debetur thalamo reverentia, coniunx
Alternum debet coniugi & obsequium.[3]

When the viper is sexually aroused, it stations itself on the sea-shore and ejects the dread poisons from its gut. To summon the moray eel, it raises a loud hissing, and immediately she comes to the embrace of her mate. - Great reverence is owed to the marriage bed, and the partners owe each other mutual respect.

Que l’honneur est deu au mariage.

LE serpent desireux d’avoir l’accouplement
De la Murene, il va sur le bord promptement
De la mer, & illec par quelque temps s’arreste.
Là où de l’estomac tout son poison il gette:
Puis sifflant assez haut, la Murene il appelle:
Et venue qu’elle est plaisamment jouyt d’elle.
Par ce nous apprenons, que l’on doibt bien porter
Honneur au mariage, & toute haine en oster:
Se respecter l’un l’autre, & facile se rendre,
Et pour maintenir paix, sur tout bien s’entrentendre.

L’Amour de ceux qui sont en mariage
doit estre tellement reciproque & plein
de sincerité, que combien qu’il y ait quelque
chose d’amertume en l’un d’eux, & l’autre ait
quelque riote en soy, toutesfois en contem-
plation du sainct lien de mariage, cela doit
estre vomy & poussé hors. Ce que declare
plus amplement Basile le grand en l’Home-
lie 7. sur l’Hexaëmeron, dont est prins cest
embleme.

1.  For the mating of the viper with the moray eel, see Pliny, Natural History 9.39.76; Aelian, De natura animalium 1.50; 9.66. The viper spits out the poison in order to be gentle and safe for the union.

2.  Variant reading in 1550, At subito amplexus, ‘and suddenly she comes to the embrace ...’. There is a further variant reading, At simul amplexum, ‘but she at the same time desires the embrace ...’.

3.  Some editions give a variant reading Aeternum ... obsequium, ‘never-ending respect’.
