L’arc en la main, en l’autre la massue,
Peau de Lyon estant cy apperceuë,
Pour Hercules me fait ce vieillard croire:
Mais ce qu’il a marqué de si grand’, gloire,

Furent ainsi que pris par les oreilles.
Si donc il a par loix & ordonnances
Rangé les gents, plustost que par vaillances,
Dira lon pas (comme c’est verité)
Que l’espee a lieu aux livres quitté?
Et qu’un dur coeur par sages mieux se range,
Que gros effort son aspresté ne change?
Pource Hercules n’usa pas de grand’ force:
Et si chacun de le suyvre s’efforce.

Il descrit icy un homme, qui en sa senestre a son arc,
& en sa dextre sa masse ferree, & une peau de Lion
pour toute couverture. C’est donc icy l’effigie d’Her-
cules
. Mais ses cheveux blancs, ny ces chainettes, qui
sont attachees à sa langue d’un costé, & de l’autre
sont attachees aux oreilles de plusieurs personnes: celà,
dis-je, ne s’accorde pas à la forme qu’on peint coustu-

nettes signifient, qu’Hercules, de quelques grands for-
ces qu’il fust doué, ne mit pas sous sa puissance tant
de peuples farouches, comme feroit un jeune homme,
par sa force & par ses armes, mais bien les dompta-il
par sa singuliere eloquence, & par son insigne pru-
dence, qui accompagne ordinairement les vieillards
& experimentés. Les armes souvent quittent la place
à la longue robbe: & bien souvent les plus fascheuses
guerres sont appaisees & esteinctes par un beau par-
ler, & par un docte discours. La longue robbe est
souvent prise pour la paix, comme aussi c’estoit l’ha-
bit ordinaire des Rommains lors qu’ils n’avoyent
point de guerre.

Aetheriis postquam deiecit sedibus Aten,
Iupiter[1] heu vexat quàm mala noxa viros.
Evolat haec pedibus celer & pernicibus alis,
Intactumque nihil casibus esse sinit.
Ergo litae proles Iovis hanc comitantur euntem,[2]

Sed quia segnipedes strabe[3] lassaeque senecta,
Nihil nisi post longo tempore restituunt.[4]

Once Jupiter had cast Ate down from the heavenly abode, what an evil bane thereafter assailed poor man! Ate flies out fleet of foot with fast-beating wing and leaves nothing untouched by mishap. So Jove’s daughters, the Litae, accompany her as she goes, to mend whatever ill she has brought about. But they are slow-footed, poor of sight and weary with age, and so they restore nothing until later, after long passage of time.

Notes:

1.  ‘Jupiter had cast Ate down’. See Homer, Iliad 19. 125ff.

2.  ‘the Litae accompany her’. See Homer, Iliad 9.502ff. Ate means ‘Mischief’, Litae, ‘Prayers’. Ate was cast out of Olympus to bring harm to mankind, a personification of humans being led astray. The Litae were a personification of prayers offered in repentance.

3.  Textual variant: luscae.

4.  The woodcut is puzzling. Possibly the monster is supposed to represent Ate; in later editions she appears as a harpy-like figure. The Litae feature, in later editions, as old women. The old man presumably represents the suffering of mankind.
