Mortelle Inimitie naturelle est entre L’aigle tresnoble
oyseau: & l’Escharbot tresvile, & orde beste, qui pour ven-
ger le despris de L’aigle, se cache en ses plumes, & porté
au nid, casse les oeufz, & empesche generation, & multi-
plication des Aigles. Par laquelle nature, on cognoit estre
vray ce qu’on dict. il n’est nul petit ennemy.

Icarus and his father Daedalus (see [A49a008]) escaped from King Minos of Crete on wings of feathers and wax. Icarus was over-bold and flew too near the sun; when his wings melted, he crashed into the Icarian Sea and was drowned. See Ovid, Metamorphoses 8.183ff. Icarus, like Phaethon (see [A49a064]) was a type of those who do not keep to their proper station.
