Qui d’homme n’ha ne de serpent la monstre?
Mais est serpent sans chief, & sans piedz homme?
Doncq’ serpenpied, Hommenchef je le nomme.

Cecrops tel Monstre, en Athenes regna
La terre, telz ses filz Geans forma.
Tel Monstre, monstre ung homme sage en soy,
Qui terre aimant, ne tient ne Dieu, ne Foy.

Par ce Monstre sont notéz ceulx
qui forméz d’ame raisonnable, &
d’esprit coelest: toutesfois ne
esperent aultre vie que terrestre.

1.  Cecrops, the mythical wise first king of Athens, the city of Pallas Athene, the goddess of wisdom. Cecrops, like the Giants (l.8) was born of the earth and was represented as half-man, half snake.
