Làs moy miserable noyer,
Suis je pas malheureux de vivre?
Je rens fruict, & pour mon loyer,
Coups de tous costés on me livre:
La plante qui rien ne delivre,
N’a pas tant que moy de douleurs.
Ainsi, pour vouloir vertu suyvre,
Plusieurs accroissent leurs malheurs.[1]

Le noyer se complaind de ce qu’on l’a planté pres
d’un chemin public, ou il sert de jouet aux passas [=passans] , qui
ne cessent de luy jecter des pierres, luy rompre ses
tendres rameaux avec des bastons, luy entamer son

plustost on devroit faire ce traictement aux arbres
steriles & infructueux. Il semble, comme il est vray,
que sa fertilité luy cause tout ce dommage & tout
ce detriment. Il advient ordinairement que les Prin-
ces, & autres qui ont superiorité traictent plus indi-
gnement ceux de qui ils perçoyvent plus de commo-
dités & de services, qu’ils ne font pas les autres.

Quand Eneas portoit hors de peril
Son pere, Aulx Grecs pardonnez. (disoit il)
Gloire n’aurez ung vieil à mort livré.
Grand gloire auray mon pere delivré.[1]

A ung filz est grand honneur de rendre ou sauver
la vie, à celuy duquel il tient la vie apres Dieu, (qui
est son Pere) Qui est le meilleur, & plus louable acte
que jamais feit Eneas.

1.  This is based on Anthologia graeca 9.163, a much translated epigram. It refers to the celebrated incident of Aeneas’ rescue of his old father at the sack of Troy, carrying him on his shoulders through the occupied and burning city. See Vergil, Aeneid 2.634ff.
