Obnoxia infirmitas.

Weakness is vulnerable

Emblema clxix.

Pisciculos Aurata rapit medio aequore sardas,
Ni fugiant pavidae, summa marísque petant.
Ast ibi sunt mergis fulicísque voracibus esca.
Eheu intuta manens undique debilitas!

The little sardines the golden wrasse swallows in the depths of the ocean, unless in fear they flee and make for the surface of the sea. But there they provide a meal for greedy divers and other sea-birds. Alas for weakness, remaining everywhere at risk.

UT nullo non loco ditiores, & qui sunt fortuna
ampliore, tutum in praesidium se recipiunt: ita
miseri, & aliqua parte infirmi homines praecipites
in exitium ruunt, quocunque fugiant: nam ubi è
suorum lapsi telis, ad exteros venerint, ibi miserè
periclitantur & occidunt.

aucunement souffreteux, quelque part qu’ils
fuyent, sont tousjours malheureux. car quand
il [=ils] sont eschappez des menees qui leurs estoient
brassees par ceux du pays, s’estans rendus
chez les estrangers, ilz y trouvent leur rui-
ne, & y meurent.

EMBLEMA CLXXXIX [=188] .

Remedia in arduo, mala in prono
esse.

Remedies are hard, damage is easy

Aetheriis postquam deiecit sedibus Athen
Iuppiter:[1] Heu vexat quam mala noxa viros?
Evolat haec pedibus celer, & pernicibus alis,
Intactumque nihil casibus esse sinit.

Sarturae quicquid fecerit illa mali,
Sed quia segnipedes luscae, lassaeque senecta,
Nil nisi post longo tempore restituunt.

Once Jupiter had cast Ate down from the heavenly abode, what an evil bane thereafter assailed poor man! Ate flies out fleet of foot with fast-beating wing and leaves nothing untouched by mishap. So Jove’s daughters, the Litae, accompany her as she goes, to mend whatever ill she has brought about. But they are slow-footed, poor of sight and weary with age, and so they restore nothing until later, after long passage of time.

Das CLXXXIX [=188] .

Hülff ligt hoch, verderben nach.

Als Juppiter der höchste Gott
Vons Himmel Thron verstossen hat
Aten die Göttin Neids und Hassz
Ey wie plagt sie das Ertrich grassz
Mit iren Flügeln sie gar gschwind
Hinfleugt, ir Füß darzu schnell sind
Last also hin kein sach noch ort
Dens nit beschmeist und wüst betort
Der folgen aber hinden nach
Die Lite Jovis Töchter gmach
Wölten geren verbessern than
Was diese hat böß grichtet an
Dieweil sie aber alt und treg
Langsam und mit irem Gsicht schreg
Seind, können sie verbessern nicht
Es sey dann lange zeit hingricht.

Notes:

1.  ‘Jupiter had cast Ate down’. See Homer, Iliad 19. 125ff.

2.  ‘the Litae accompany her’. See Homer, Iliad 9.502ff. Ate means ‘Mischief’, Litae, ‘Prayers’. Ate was cast out of Olympus to bring harm to mankind, a personification of humans being led astray. The Litae were a personification of prayers offered in repentance.
