Regnatorque penus, mensaeque arrosor herilis
Ostrea mus summis vidit hiulca labris.
Queis teneram apponens barbam, falsa ossa momordit,
Ast ea clauserunt tacta repentè domum.
Deprensum & tetro tenuerunt carcere furem,
Semet in obscurum qui dederat tumulum.[1]
A mouse, king of the pantry, nibbler at the master’s table, saw oysters with their shells just slightly open. Applying his sensitive whiskers, he nibbled the deceptive bone. But the oysters, when touched, suddenly slammed shut their house and held the thief, caught red-handed, in a noisome prison, a thief who had put himself into a lightless tomb.

S’estant luy mesme en sa fosse jetté.
CEcy est d’une fable d’Esope, & s’entend
de ceux qui pour vivre plus à leur aise,
se fourrent es maison des riches, dont ils
ne rapportent que dommage ou la mort mes-
me. Ou il s’accommode contre ceux qui pour
estre trop adonnez à leur plaisir & à une vie
intemperante, se font une vie courte, ou com-
me dit le proverbe françois, font leurs fosses
en leurs dents.

No one can make anything out of small resources. One clump of trees does not feed two robins.

There is no hope of gain where means are small. Two flycatchers (lit. fig-peckers) don’t lodge well in one clump of trees.
1. ‘One clump of trees does not feed two robins’. For this proverb, see Apostolius, Proverbs 11.68, where it is said to refer to ‘those who try to turn something small into a source of profit’.
