Serpent, qui sa queuë retient,
L’an, ou bien grand temps nous designe:
Triton (qui au milieu se tient)
De publication rend signe.
Celuy qui par lettre est insigne,
Son nom renommee public,
Dont devant tous il est si digne,
Qu’au grand jamais on ne l’oublie.[1]

Triton est tenu pur Dieu marin, & trompette de

Neptune. Quand il entonne sa trompe sonoreuse, il se
fait ouir par tous les endroits de la mer,
esveillant &
encourageant en chacun. Par le haut il a forme d’hom-
me mais ses parties basses ressembent à celles du Dau-
phin. On le peind au milieu d’un serpent mais en cercle.
Triton designe les
personnes de merite, les gents do-
ctes, & les poetes. Les anciens, pour figurer l’an, ou
un temps immemorial, peignoyent un serpent, qui mor-
doit sa queuë: & par la mesme peincture
ils desi-
gnoyent aussi le monde universel. Cest embleme nous
enseigne que les gents de lettres, & amateurs des
Muses, se rendent ordinairement celebres & renom-
més par tout l’Univers.

Triton, Neptune’s trumpeter, whose tail shows him as a sea-monster, his face as a god of the sea, is surrounded by an encircling snake which bites on its own tail, gripped fast in its mouth. Fame follows after men of outstanding intellect and their noble achievements, and bids them be read throughout all the world.
