The power of nature

LXXVI [=77] .

Pana colunt gentes, (naturam hoc dicere rerum est)
Semicaprumque hominem, semivirumque Deum.
Vir tenus umblico est, hominum quòd propria virtus[1]
Corde oriens celsa verticis arce sedet.
Hinc caper est, quia nos naturam [=natura] in secla propagat
Concubitu, ut volucres, squamea, bruta, feras.
Quod commune aliis animantibus, est caper index
Luxuriae, Veneris, signaque aperta gerit.
Cordi alii sophian, alii tribuere cerebro.
Inferiora modus, nec ratio ulla tenet.

Pagans worship Pan, that is the force of nature, a man half-goat, a god half-man. Pan is a man down to the navel, because the power that is peculiar to men rises from the heart and has its seat in the high citadel of the head. Below this he is goat, because Nature perpetuates us down the ages by sexual intercourse, as she does birds, fish, brute beasts and wild. This is a thing shared with other living creatures. The goat is a sign of licentiousness, and carries Venus’ standards unconcealed. Wisdom some have assigned to the heart, others to the head. The lower parts neither restraint nor reason governs.

    NOmine Panos, natura significatur hominis. Pan
    enim pro Deo habitus, superiore fui parte ho-
    minem, inferiore verò caprum referebat. Homo
    natura divina est, angelica, caelesti, immortali, si
    eius animum spectes, in quo mens, ratio, intelligen-
    tia, quibus partibus antecellit aliis animantibus.
    Est & inferior animi pars ex coniunctione corpo-

    Nature.

    Pan, comme il est depeint, represente Nature:
    Le mot le signifie, & en fait-on un Dieu,
    En forme d’homme & bouc: car ainsi qu’il est veu,
    Homme est jusqu’au nombril: c’est que la creature
    Humaine a la raison nee au coeur, & assise
    Au chef, comme en son fort & forteresse mise,
    Il est bouc au dessous: car par accouplement
    De masle & de femelle universellement
    Nous sommes procreez en ce monde, ainsi comme
    Les oiseaux, les poissons, & les bestes qui font
    Tant de diversitez: & qui par terre vont,
    Le bouc est de luxure une vray’ marque en somme
    Les outils de Venus icy ne cachant pas.
    La sagesse est au coeur: autres au chef la mettent:
    Les parties d’embas nulle raison n’admettent,
    Tout y est desreiglé, sans moyen ny compas.

    SOubs le nom de Pan est signifiee la na-
    ture de l’homme. Car Pan, estimé pour
    Dieu, avoit la semblance d’homme en ses
    parties d’enhaut, & d’un bouc en celles
    d’embas. l’homme est participant de natu-
    re divine
    , angelique, celeste, immortelle,

    raison, l’intelligence, par lesquelles par-
    ties il excelle aux autres animaux. Il y a
    encores une autre partie inferieure de l’a-
    me, eu esgard à la conjonction du corps,
    en laquelle partie n’y a point de raison: &
    est brute, feroce, & plus ressemblant à la
    beste qu’à l’homme, ou sont les perturba-
    tions. Le bouc est prins pour marque de lu-
    xure, comme un chacun scet: car par l’ac-
    coupplement charnel tous animaux vien-
    nent à naistre & se multiplier.
