A fox, entering the store-room of a theatrical producer, found an actor’s mask, skilfully shaped, so finely fashioned that the spirit alone was missing, in all else it seemed alive. Taking it up, the fox addressed it - What a head is this, but it has no brain!

Remora, (ainsi appellee des Latins, pource qu’elle
retient & arreste,) est un petit poisson de couleur
noire, qui peut en la mer arrester un navire tout
court, quelque grand qu’il soit, en s’attachant à
luy,
quelque bon vent qu’il aye, quelque nombre de
rames qui le facent vistement singler en mer. Ainsi il
se rencontre beaucoup de personnages bien nais, ver-
tueux, & de gentil esprit, qui s’arrestent tout court
au milieu de la carriere, si qu’ils ne peuvent plus aller
avant. En ceste interruption de leur course
procede
bien souvent d’une chose de rien & de nulle conside-
ration. Aux uns un meschant
proces, aux autres un
amour follastre, & semblables
nivelleries les destour-
ne, & les empesche de suyvre la voye de la vertu
en laquelle il sembloit qu’ils se fussent si courageuse-
ment acheminés.
