The oak is pleasing to Jove who preserves and cherishes us. A crown of oak is given to one who preserves a fellow-citizen. The oak fed men of old with its acorns. Now it benefits us only with its shade. In this way too the tree of Jove does us service.

Commentaires.
Le laurier, symbole des devinements, est consacré
à Apollon, que les payens tenoyent pour Dieu des
predictions. La feuille de laurier
mise au feu, si elle pe-
tille, presagit bonheur, &
malheur si elle brusle sans
bruit. Les amoureux s’en servent en leurs complain-
tes. L’autre distique est faict en faveur de l’Empe-
reur Charles cinquieme, qui prit par force Thunis en
Afrique sur le Corsaire Barberousse.
1. The laurel was sacred to Apollo, god of prophecy. The priestess of Apollo at Delphi induced a prophetic trance by chewing laurel leaves. Prophecies were sometimes written on laurel leaves. If laurel leaves crackle when thrown into the flames, happiness is portended.
