1. áSee Pliny, Natural History, 16.25.102: ‘the mulberry is the last of domesticated trees to shoot, and only does so when the frosts are over; for that reason it is called the wisest of trees’.

2. áReference to a supposed ‘etymology by opposites’: Latin morus ‘mulberry’ was equated with Greek μῶρος ‘fool’, but the tree was considered wise: see note 1.

Le citron doux amer Ó Venus bien convient,
Car Amour en son miel beaucoup d’amer contient.

Commentaires.

On peut aussi dire que le citron est le symbole de
l’amour: car il est de couleur d’or: & sa saveur est
bien aucunement douce & austere, mais son escorce
est du tout amere. Ainsi l’orde voluptÚ rid de plein
abord, & semble estre toute d’or: mais apres qu’elle a
baillÚ un peu du doux, elle baille l’amer Ó plein go-
det.
