Le Laurier monstre ou salut, ou danger,
Soubz le chevet faict vrayz songes songer.[1]

soubz la teste du dormant, faict songer choses
veritablement passées, presentes, ou futures.

ctoires, triumphans portoient le Laurier en
main, & en teste, en branche, & en coronne.

tification à Charles cinquiesme Empereur,
retournant victorieux de Thunes en la Gou-
lete[2], ou jadis fut Carthage.
1. The laurel was sacred to Apollo, god of prophecy. The priestess of Apollo at Delphi induced a prophetic trance by chewing laurel leaves. Prophecies were sometimes written on laurel leaves. If laurel leaves crackle when thrown into the flames, happiness is portended.
2. La Goulette is the port of Tunis (Halq al Wadi).
