Promethee fils de Japet, fut le premier, qui fit des
statues de terre destrempee.
Celà a donné quelque oc-
casion aux inventeurs de fables, de dire que ce Pro-
methee estoit monté au
ciel, & avoit desrobbé le feu di-
vin, a fin d’animer la statue
qu’il avoit faict. Dont
Jupiter fut tellement indigné, qu’il le fit
enchainer sur
le mont de Caucase, (mont de Scythie merveilleuse-
ment haut, rude, & maupiteux,) & luy adjoignit un
aigle, qui sans cesse luy devoroit le foye a mesure qu’il
luy renaissoit:
& ce pour peine & chastiment de sa
temerité. Ainsi la plus part des astrologues, & ceux
qui trop curieusement recherchent ce que Dieu a
voulu estre caché & couvert,
ceux la, dis-je, se CHECK BOOK ba-
tellent miserablement leur ames par leurs vaines &
assiduelles imaginations & recerches.

2. The Titan Prometheus appears in myth as the champion of men against the ill-will of Zeus. According to one account, he moulded man out of clay (hence the reference to figuli, lit. ‘potters’, in l.3). Again, when Zeus withheld fire from mortals, Prometheus ascended to heaven and stole fire from the chariot of the sun for the benefit of men. As a perpetual punishment, Prometheus was put in chains and suspended from a rock in the Caucasus, where an eagle, the sacred bird of Zeus, in the day-time consumed his liver, which renewed itself every night. See Ovid, Metamorphoses 1.82ff; Hesiod, Theogony 561ff.
