Sçais tu que denote Mercure,[1]

Sur des pierres pres de la voye:
Et qui de la monstrer prend cure,
A fin que nul ne se fourvoye?
Il veut dire, que Dieu pourvoit
En ce mondain chemin, les hommes.
Sans son ayde, on s’esgareroit
En tant de faux sentiers où sommes.

Les chemins fourchus, qui se divisent en trois ou
quatre diverses voyes, rendent le voyageur merveil-
leusement perplex & incertain. C’est pourquoy an-
ciennement en ces quarrefours ambigus, on
eslevoit
sur des pierres une statue de Mercure, ou plustost
seulement depuis la ceincture en haut, laquelle avec
son doigt ou ses doigts designoit
pour où aller estoyent
les chemins qui se presentoyent,
Aujourd’huy encor,
en la Chrestienté, en
plusieurs Croix il y a des batons

ou liteaux qui enseignent les-dits chemins. Et encor
souvent il n’y a que des chevrons ou autres pieces de
bois, plantees en terre, qui servent
à celà mesme. Les
payens avoyent accoustumé d’attacher ou apposer à
ces Mercures des bouquets & chappelets de fleurs.
Le plus dangereux trivie ou chemin fourchu, c’est ce-
luy qui se presente souvent
à nos ames. Dieu nous
face la grace de
nous addresser & conduire tousjours
au droit chemin de ses statuts & ordonnances, & ne
permette jamais que nous nous en esgarions.
