FACTA IUVENUM, CONSILIA SENUM
ACTIONS ARE FOR YOUTH; COUNSELS FOR OLD AGE
O foelix princeps! quem circunsistit utrinque
Vivida vis Iuvenum, consiliumque Senum.
O contrą, infoelix Princeps! cui armata iuventus
Plus placet: extruso cum sene consilio.
Exemplum est Roboam, regno privatus avito,
Qui senibus pulsis consuluit iuvenes.[1]
O happy Prince, who stands surrounded by the lively strength of youth, and the counsels of the aged! But most unfortunate Prince, who prefers his armčd bands of youths; and expels good counsel together with the aged. The example? Rehoboam, deprived of his paternal realm, who drove the old away and consulted the young.
1. Rehoboam, son of Solomon, King of Judah, lost the northern portion of the kingdom after listening to his younger counsellors who advised raising taxes.
