Qui ne presse ses reins de rancoeur, ny d’envie;
Qui ne charge sur soy de vice le poison;
Pousse ses membres froids de la nef au cercueil;

Petri Lepidi Metensis symbolum.[2]
Nec scyllam nec charybdin.
Neither Scylla nor Charybdis
EXactâ vitam quisquis ratione gubernat,
Quique Deum cursûs optat habere ducem;
Securo placidê verret vada caerula remo;
Sit licet in Siculum puppis adacta fretum.[3]
Whoever rules his life with precise reason, and choses to have God as leader of the journey, will calmly sweep out the heavenly shallows with a sure oar; perhaps the ship may be driven to the Sicilian channel.
1. For the association of God and reason, see Seneca, De constantia, 8.3; De otio, 5.5; or Lipsius De constantia, 1.5.
2. Pierre Joly of Metz, who was responsible for the French sonnets in this work, a Protestant lawyer.
3. Scylla and Charybdis were said to inhabit the channel between Sicily and the Italian mainland.
