1. Tarquinius Sextus was the son of Tarquinius Superbus, last King of Rome, whose downfall was prompted by Sextus’ rape of Lucretia. The Gabionites were from the town of Gabii in Latium, east of Rome, a frequent rival to Roman dominance. Sextus ruled the city as prince under his father, and retired there after his expulsion from Rome in 510, but was himself put to death (Livy, Ab Urbe Condita, 1.49-60).
